How to say 'It's delicious' or ' It's not delicious'

Delicious

Taste in Korean is 맛. So, how do we say 'It's tasty' or 'It's delicious in Korean?
The word in Korean which means 'to have' in English is 있어요(itseoyo). So, all you have to do is to add this 있어요 after 맛. So, it becomes, 맛있어요(masitseoyo).

Example 1
Q. 뭐 먹었어요? What did you eat? (mwo meog-eoss-eo-yo?)
A. 비빔밥을 먹었어요. I ate Bibimpap. (bibimpapeul meog-eoss-eo-yo.)
Q. 비빔밥은 어뗐어요? How was Bibimbap?( bibimbapeun eottesseoyo?)
A. 맛있었어요. It was delicious. (masisseosseoyo)

Not delicious

Like this, the word in Korean which has the meaning 'don't have' or 'not' is 없어요 (eopseoyo). So, in order to make 'It's delicious' to 'It's not delicious', all you have to do is to add 없어요 after 맛. Together, you get this, 맛없어요 (maseopseoyo).
See, it's easy, right?
Now let's look at some example.

Example 2
Q. 뭐 먹었어요? What did you eat? (mwo meog-eoss-eo-yo?)
A. 비빔밥을 먹었어요. I ate Bibimpap. (bibimpapeul meog-eoss-eo-yo.)
Q. 비빔밥은 어뗐어요? How was Bibimbap?( bibimbapeun eottesseoyo?)
A. 맛없었어요 It wasn't delicious. (mas-eops-eoss-eo-yo)

 Tastes in Korean

There are mainly six tastes that are common in Korean foods. (Not only in Korea but also in almost every place). Those six tastes are,

Conclusion

So, if you're invited to someone's place and they invite you to join with them for dinner (or lunch or breakfast, anything), what will you say?
The phrase that is used by Koreans in this scenario is 잘 먹겠습니다 (jal meog-ggess-seub-ni-da), which means, 'I'll enjoy this food', or in other words, you are showing your gratitude for their hospitality and for the food. After you finish the food, you can say 잘 먹었읍니다 (jal meog-eoss-eub-ni-da) means, I ate well.

And what will you say, if someone asks about the taste of the food?

If the food is sweet - 달아요
If it is sour - 시어요
If it is salty - 짜요.
If it is bitter - 써요.
If it is spicy - 매워요.

These words can be made into question forms by raising the intonation at the end of the word. For example, 달아요? Means, Is it sweet?
매워요? Is it spicy?

I think now everything that is related to the tastes in Korean is complete. We'll learn different types of foods and drinks in the coming posts.

Till then try to memorize these tastes and practice using them. If you still have any doubt, or if I have made any mistake above, feel free to comment below.

Bye!
